Some of you might have already caught this video, since i'm late to post it on this blog. There's still questions about 1080 monitoring on an external LCD monitor and 480SD monitoring while in record mode. This is the same for the other Canon DSLR's. They show 1080 if just monitoring and when playing back a video clip, but will drop to 480SD while in record mode. Some people don't notice this on tiny LCD's, because the camera will maintain the same aspect ratio. Here's a look on my HDTV that i'm using as an external monitor in the studio.

  • 550d, 600d, 60d and 5d mk 2 all drop to sd output via hdmi in record mode BUT 7d is only one that maintains hd out in record mode. Don't know about other Canons

  • @DavideoDesign Thanks, this video was done when the 60D was first released. People had questions back then.

  • I know people can hate.. but I have to say I'm amazed the camera has the processing power to even put out video on external monitor. That is a huge feat in itself.

  • @darrenrodway i think it records it at 1080 or whatever you have it set on. You just see it in standard def on the lcd screen while recording :)

  • I am deciding on either a Canon 60d or Nikon D7000.

Are you saying that if you connect an external monitor, the Canon will record it to SD card as 480p or do you see it in 480p whilst it records in 1950p

  • @thatniggbeme7 From every thing that I have read and seen, the video quality is identical (and that includes the 7D). The main differences are flip-out screen, manual audio control, and about $400.00 with the basic kit lens.

  • @630alpha I see now that you made a new video on Vimeo, showing that de 7D DOES put out 1080p. I had made a video reply for you but it seems that I'm too late, so I won't upload it :P

Anyway, perfect moment to say: "HAH! Toldyouso!" ;-)

  • question which is the better camera as far as video quality goes..60d or t2i??

  • @630alpha I know, that's why I've been so confused. I read everywhere on the internet that it will drop to 480. I will feel so dumb that if I'd post a video, that suddenly I'd come to the conclusion that mine is just the same! I've not got an awesome studio like you to test it, but I'll try to show it rather sooner than later :)
