The Maharajah of Gondol once had FOUR palaces until India became independent. Now the poor guy has to make do with three. Two are hotels, one to live in and the fourth had to be relinquished to a trust in 1947. Even though all the Maharajah's lost their taxing powers at that time, I don't think he is sitting on a street corner begging for pennies, do you?

Guide Niru took us to see the Naulakha Place built in the 17th century. In-cred-ible...is all I can saw. The impressive outside with lifelike and legendary stone carvings. Beyond spacious grounds. An entire separate palace for the women, and then the unbelievable inside filled with priceless objects that ranged from stuffed panthers and leopards to a silver camel saddle. What a place!
