Founded by former modeling agency owner and Australian entrepreneur Shelley Barrett in 2002, ModelCo has gained a cult following for its tanning products and offbeat skincare and color SKUs. Inspired by quick-fix solutions for high-fashion models but aimed at glamorous women on-the-go, every item in the tightly-edited collection has that wow factor, Ms. Barrett said.
This April, the company is set to take on the self-tanning category once again with the Sun Sponge—an ergonomically-designed self-tanning tool that negates manual application.
Billed as a hero item alongside the brands widely beloved Tan Airbrush in a Can—which launched in March 2005 and was the first airbrush tanning product to hit the market, said Sarah Pesce, vice president, North America, of ModelCo—Sun Sponge is another first-of-its-kind launch. Its tinted formula self-adjusts to various skin tones and is scented with cocoa butter. Key ingredients include wild rose hip and apricot and palm tree extracts—a moisturizing cocktail also known as 1% Fructiplex, which has never been used in a self-tanning product before.
The sponge itself doubles as a buffing cloth to ensure even application. With pressure, an internal valve releases the precise amount of product necessary. A specially-designed cap can be used for traveling or between applications.
Sun Sponge is priced at $39.00 for 6.42 oz., or approximately three to four full-body applications—after which it is meant to be disposed.
