The team wanted to get in a trim flight before the contest. The plane ended up in a tree. It turned out that the antenna did not like being routed inside the fuselage, by rotating the plane while doing a radio check the team found that the radio would failsafe at certain angles, so the antenna was rerouted externally. On the second flight the plane entered into a difficult to recover spiral / spin. This was remedied by adding end plates to the horizontal stab (fangs.)Always make sure your design has adequate control volume.

  • man, that's exactly why here at Wichita State we recommend NOT to go to that field (Beech lake) for flight testing before the competition.
