Filmmaker Wim Wenders offers his opinions on editing in musical sequences in this segment from an interview conducted for the cult Manhattan cable-access program "Media Funhouse." He stresses his opposition to the standard MTV editing style, something he first wrote about publicly when he was a rock/film critic for German periodicals. Wenders' work with music in film has ranged from his earliest "road movies" where characters grooved on old 45s, to his excellent use of rock references in his quintessential thriller "The American Friend," to later documentaries about musicians like "The Buena Vista Social Club." The clip that illustrates his graceful visual style and underscores what he is talking about is from his underrated fictional diary-pic about a wandering sound man, "Lisbon Story" (1994).

  • Always a sensitive comment from Wenders. He's fantastic! The Brazilian documentary Janela da Alma (Window of Soul) has very interesting points from this and other authors with respect to the conception of today's world: reality, films, human sensibility, and so on. I strongly recomend it.

  • Interesting perspective from Wim Wenders, hauntingly beautiful performance from Portugal's Madredeus.  Nice!

  • Got in touch once with guitar singer Peter Stampfel & the Bottle caps band. Shepard was a green card drummer in his holymodalrounders band. How come Stampfel wasn't casted in that Knock thing?

  • For Mr. Wim's next movie it would be nice to hear some of the Red Earth Tribal Stew Rock-Mettalica-Reggae-Brazilia­n band's songs such as Zial Soul. Them cats are FM radio Numero one in Albuquerque; check out their website, lead singer Ira Wilson, ex guitar player Adrian Wall (now a sculptor) in Acoma, N.M..

    Friends are mine. I wonder if Wenders will ever read this she-it of mine. U think?

  • Read t'Serstevens's road novel The Sentimental Vagabond (1923) translated by Whittaker Chambers for Rinehart N.Y. editions (30's). Kerouac kind of. t'Serstevens & Cendrars would often meet in Lisboa, away from Paris. Same breed as Sam Fuller.

  • Wim is working on a film-adaptation oftravel writer Albert t'Serstevens' (1885-1974) memoirs The Man who was Blaise Cendrars (1972), collaborating with Shepard himself a big reader of t'Serstevens.
