On 8/20/10, my Department held its annual PBA Awards Dinner; unfortunately I had to work that night, but briefly stopped by while on duty—with my trumpet. I played 2 pieces SOLO:
1) 'Tico Tico' -- a very famous Brazilian tune from around the early 1900's that lends itself nicely to modern interpretations, & the name of which roughly translates to 'Sparrows in the Cornmeal' (many of the REAL Jazz greats--including Charlie Parker, etc--have recorded it...)
2) 'Luz Marilyn' -- a piece that I wrote for my beautiful Latino Wife, while we were still dating. It is my composition, but I'm not really sure how 'original' it actually is. To me it sounds now a lot like Gato Barbieri's 'Europa' (with some self-answering fills to the melody line & a different bridge)...it's still a nice tune though with a nice gesture--& hey, it helped land me the girl!

Anyway, thanks to friend & retired colleague Steve Kardian with a quick i-phone, most of my performance was videoed. Unfortunately the whole thing was not captured it its entirety—but whatever was, is all posted here—UNEDITTED. Hope you enjoy it!

Off camera, one of my 'brothers in blue' had requested I play some 'Chuck Mangione'—& thus the goof at the end of this clip.
As is known in my Department, I had the pleasure of meeting Chuck while on duty a few years back, when his band gave a performance in our jurisdiction at the Kensico Dam. I found him to be a very humble, gracious & gentle soul, with many kind words of encouragement towards my own playing. I feel honored to have met him & thankful for his time, as I got to talk with him at significant length. It is something I will always remember & look forward to telling my kids about it someday.

  • where did you get the music for tico tico?

  • @AllahisBrazillian-There's no sheet music for my version here;I've been playing this beautiful piece since I was a kid & from only a melody sheet-even still play it in the wrong key! But thru my own musical growth,I have listened inward & stretched out to find some nuances. Please see my website as I'm re-recording this tune & will post it there. I’ve come close, but just haven’t nailed it yet & want to do it all in 1 take. Thx for listening & for all Brazil's musical contribs!

  • @TheMiguelGA --Thanks for commenting...& go Brasil!

BTW, Brazilian-born Claudio Roditi is an absolute trumpet hero to me. If you're not familiar with him, you should check out his work--awesome player! Thanks again for watching. -PjB
