Beth Fertig, WNYC reporter and author of Why Can't You Teach Me 2 Read?, explores urban schools through the story of three NYC students who made it to high school without being able to read.
So where does parental responsibility play out in the lives of these children? I don't know about New York, but in my city there are places where kids can get free tutoring - especially in the inner city. I assume there are libraries in New York? Don't the libraries have reading programs? Libraries also have free Internet - and there are free reading programs online (Progressive Phonics). The kids get through high school without knowing how to read - how does a parent not know this?
