16 valves and an intercooled turbo in 1984 was quite exotic technology on such a car. Remember many Japanese cars were tooling around with carburettors and Audis, Benzes and BMWs had 2 valves/cylinder. It took quite a while for others to catch up. Then, oddly enough, SAAB quit giving the market many meaningful innovations.

@10101MB I had an 8-valve from '83. What a machine. Even with a new GTI under my arm, I still miss it.
