This is a drum cover of DMB's song, Tripping Billies. Carter Beauford is one of my top 3 favorite drummers and influences, the drum part he conceived for this song is something to be marvelled at.. it's sooooo good, and a LOT of fun to play :) i really had a good time covering this one.

I don't know what heppened to the audio, somehow the quality is a LOT lower than my other video's, it has to be at youtube's side of things because on my pc they sound exactly like the older covers, if not better. sometime in the near future i'll make a plan to host all the dvd quality video's on a website, anybody with some expertise in terms of video compression.. please let me know!

I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums, through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself.. :) And I thouroughly succeeded in doing that, I might add ;)

*TECHNICAL INFO*

Drumkit:
Tama Superstar Custom; in the Blue Metallic Fade

Heads:
Toms TOP: Remo Powerstroke 3, Clear.
Toms BOTTOM: stock heads.
Snare TOP: Remo Emperor, Coated.
Snare BOTTOM: stock head.
Bassdrum BATTER: Remo Powerstroke 4, Clear.

Cymbals:
Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup:
14" Hats
16" Crash
20" Ride
Secondary Crash: Sabian XS20 Medium-Thin 16" Crash

(please note the toms are tuned and equalized for RECORDING purposes, live they need to be tuned a lot more "open" to sound as good as in the recording. and yes, the kit DOES sound that good live :) i had almost NO equalising on the drums themselves, and ONLY removed some low frequencies from the overheads. basically i only levelled the mix and applied compression.)

*RECORDING*

I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY *ONE* stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track.

  • i like cobus, but i cant help but NOT like what he did with this song...

  • Oh my fucking god... That was amazing. I am not even gonna lie and say that guitar is harder than drums because this clearly shows that drums are more difficult to play (also considering I can play guitar amazingly, but I can't play drums, that being said I must say that the covers on my page are old and I have become a much better guitarist since then) Very impressive improv cover. :)

  • Nice drum cover! but you have to let the music flow. dont force. the more you feel the music, the better you'll play. You seemed a little stiff when playing..but still good job

  • what splash is that ? it sounds sexy as hell

  • I don't see why so many people come here just to rag on this cover. It's done extremely well, and it adds a whole new dimension to one of my favorite songs. I might even go so far as to say that I prefer this cover to the original. Cobus is a talented drummer, it's an awesome cover, both in feeling and technicality. Get over yourselves.

  • this is truly amazing. like wow.

  • This is a very difficult song to play well, and unfortunately Cobus' 'cover' really doesn't do the song justice and lacks the intricate groove that Carter Beauford has (well duh right, it's Carter Beauford!) Having said that, hitting all the punches and being able to play with the song is an accomplishment on its own. Good job Cobus, keep working at it!

  • This is one of my favorite covers from Cobus. Scratch that, this one definitely is my favorite. I will kill for the original footage or a higher quality one. High hat and symbols work is straight up win.

  • dude that song is so hard! get signed bro you rock!

  • I love that Carter is the only drummer that people who do covers take liberty with. Wish people were less afraid to do their own interpretations on more songs.
