Sultanate of Oman

The Sultanate of Oman is an Islamic absolute monarchy on the southeast coast of the Arabian peninsula. In the 17th Century Oman became powerful enough to displace the Portuguese and dominate East African trade. The British and French vied for a dominant position in Oman with the British being successful. With the downfall of the British Empire communist elements started a rebellion against the sultan in the 60's which was eventually defeated. In 1970 Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said overthrew his father and came to the throne bring many social reforms, modernization but with strong and traditional rule. He has remained on the throne and a powerful figure in the region to the present day.

I'm Kuwaiti and I've never been to Oman but I always heard that it's so peaceful and that everyone is tolerant to all different religions and cultures. I'm planning to visit Oman some time soon :)
