In 1996 during the Olympic games in Atlanta a great American athlete by the name of Michael Johnson posted a time of 19.32 sec in the 200m final. No man has come within four tenths (.4)of a second to this feat, over the ten (10) year period which brings us to today. (UPDATE: Xavier Carter AKA The X Man has recently run 19.63) Thanks for pointing that out, community!

  • so whats the closest someone has come so far? 19.37?

  • I posted four tenths(.4) of a second. Meaning, that no one aside from Frankie Fredricks on Namibia who was in that race has come within that four tenths (.4) of a second margin. I believe the closest has been Shwn Crawford at 19.72

  • actually xavier carter just recently ran the 2nd fastest time...19.63...its here also on youtube

  • Who is Xavier Carter, what's his background? I know nothing of the guy!

  • LSU track star...won the06' ncaa 100, 400, 4x100, 4x400...a real stud.

in the race that he ran 19.63.....tyson gay ran 19.7

  • It seems like that entire field was rolling in that race!

  • At the top level, I hear that running all-out on a 100m bend gives you a time 0.15s slower than if you'd have ran the same performance on a straight. Therefore with a 1st 100m time here of 10.12 for Johnson, he'd have gone sub-10 in the 100 for the first time. Astonishing - raising his head at the start is inefficient (his last 100 with a running start was 9.20, by the way).

  • funny how johnson didn't use proper technique but had such success..

  • in more than 10 years sprinters only get 2 milliseconds faster

  • i wonder what he could of done in the 100m?

  • Michael Johnson was fun to watch though!

  • the new WR 19.30-USAIN BOLT

  • Well - Bolt just beat him - 19.30

  • he got a bad start and still got 19.32...phenomenal

  • that was a great 200 meters world record..bolt jamaica wins the 200 meters in the olympics , usa second and third.

  • only time will tell , remember they said tom petranoff would never throw over 75 metersin the javelin in 1983 he threw the jav 99.72 meters or 327 feet 2 inchesfor a new worlds record , nothing is impossible , the impossible just takes more time
