In September 1776, Robert Rogers assisted in the capture of Nathan Hale, a spy for the Continental Army. Rogers did not believe Hale's cover story (that he was a teacher) and lured him into his own betrayal by pretending to be a patriot spy himself. He was a Yale classmate and close friend of Captain Benjamin Tallmadge who also worked as a spy for General Washington. Nathan Hale's statue stands in front of the CIA headquarters.
