Okay, after hours of fucking with my kernel and stuff, i've configured a working installation of Ubuntu with Seamless mode working.

What i've done:

1. Installed Ubuntu 7.10 Server
2. Booted from a Mandriva LiveCD
3. Mounted and chrooted to the Ubuntu partition
4. Installed linux-generic (since the server kernel will not boot with VirtualBox)
5. Removed the linux-server kernel
6. Booted into Ubuntu
7. Installed gcc, g++ and make
8. Installed the Sun xVM VirtualBox Guest Tools
9. Installed ubuntu-desktop
10. Enjoyed Seamless mode with Ubuntu

Yes, i know it's faster to do this all with just a Ubuntu Desktop LiveCD but I was too lazy to burn one, and the Server CD lied under my bed.

  • I'd like that but I don't feel like downloading Mandriva. Couldn't you just use the same Ubuntu iso image to boot on the installed VM?

  • yes, but i had the server version which doesn't work well with virtualbox so i had to use mandriva to get another kernel. if you have the desktop iso of ubuntu, you just have to follow step 1 and step 8 (and optionally 9 :P)

  • I don't know much about this... What does Seamless mode do? My guess is something like andLinux (opens guest OS screens in the desktop).

  • correct :D

  • this video is shit. blurry as fuck. fuck you momma

  • so i have the size and name and all set up but when i press start it comes up with and error and then says kernel driver not installed. but i have installed it. what do i do?

  • Yeah I used to use the Server Kernel for a number of things, though never because I HAD to.. Anyway, after trying to use a number of what would generally be considered more workstation than server applications on said kernel, I decided to move to the desktop kernel and have since had fewer weird challenges with stuff like this.
