I think the reason why Spanish didn't fully become our language is because the people who can speak Spanish during that era were the "maharlika" ones. I mean, they had money, so they were allowed to go to Spanish schools while our poorer ancestors had no choice but to learn the language through listening to Spanish conversations of passerbys. :P
