The most common reason is to keep the tail hairs from breaking and keep it clean. I think the reason why Dusty's wearing one that morning is that I arrived at the barn a little while before my instructor and spent more time grooming him than normal.

Hi! This saddle is an Ansur Konclusion - it's a treeless jumping saddle that I purchased this past spring off of ebay at a really good price. My horse was being a bit of a jerk, so that's my riding instructor in the video testing out the saddle.
