The undergravel filter does pick up some but not all. I think there might be too much airflow to cause a strong enough suction. Some finer gravel maybe? My goal is to cut down on the cleaning chores without sacrificing my gravel or having to vacuum so often. I hate barebottom tanks, it's like keeping someone in an empty hospital room. Not comfy. Simply wiping off the powerheads every now and then sure beats busting out the hose.

Fluval canister filters are the best! Instead of buying one huge filter, i added another fluval of the same capacity to my existing one. They are both made to filter a max of 70gal each and together they work wonderfully! The water just keeps getting clearer!

The powerheads are penguin 1140's. They pump 300gph.

I'm experimenting with different filtration methods, this was actually my 2nd time refilling the tank. It got really dirty last time, because the turtles kept uncovering the filter plates.

For the dock, i cut a large 'zoo-med' turtle platform to sit above the tank, then i tied a piece of corkbark to the holes to act as a ramp so it rises and falls with the water.

So far it seems pretty good. I need to update the lighting, though.

:)

  • what kind of plants do you have inside? because my turtles eat them all the time :/

  • @ItzOnur my plants are all plastic aquarium plants. mine don't eat them :)

  • what did you use to tie the too logs together to make the one float and where did you get it?

  • @photogrl001 the basking dock is the floating one that i got it the petstore but i cut off part of it so it rests in the grooves of the top of the tank. It already had holes in it and it doesn't move. the ramp does move and its just a piece of raw corkbark i got on ebay. the are attached together with wire coated rubber from the hardware store.

  • hey I noticed it's been 2 years now. I was wondering has your setup been enough for your turtles or did you have to upgrade? I just got a red ear slider and I'm trying to plan for Gordon's future. I notice that within a year they can become half a foot or less. So I'm assuming my 20 gallon tank won't cut it which I know. But how are you doing now that it's been 2 years pass?

  • @rollen01 well the male turtle i babysat for almost a year before giving it back to the owner. The big female is mine. I upgraded the older filter, but not the 75 gallon tank. she's about. .uh..dang i don't know 5-6 years? I stopped using the undergravel filter and replaced it with a light layer of rock & have minimal plants so she has more room. All is still fine. yep, you'll need a bigger tank.

  • nice shoes

  • Also, I love the video :) Great tutorial! As I am attempting to also build a new stand, an above tank basking platform, and possibly a new tank for my RES as he is getting way too big for a 10 gallon tank :(.

  • Hmmm.. I remember from a few of my videos my original audio was deleted as well when audio swap first came out. But it was also copyrighted. Somehow it managed to be fixed though. :S It wasn't my voice like yours. Did you try going into the video editor under your user name at the top > my videos > video editor > selecting your video and at the bottom where the audio is (may be under the audio tab) and sliding the bar thing over to use original audio? That may work.. :S

  • where did u get the gravel

  • did you have any issues with the plexiglass melting? thanks for the vid.

  • man, you are HOT!

  • how much did the tank cost u

  • pattasy-

I have 3 turtles and the clean up is becoming way to much , we're cleaning the tank at least every week. How much did it cut down the cleaning to? and what do you use to clean the tank, other than the filter?

  • Good set up. I would have built the stand / canopy so that it covered up the brown trim of the tank though. Still looks good!
