A view of the Auroras (the Northern/Southern Lights) as seen from the International Space Station during September 2011.

I got the source images for this video from here The Gateway To Astronaut Photography of Earth: "http://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/sseop/mrf.htm ".

I was inspired to upload this clip by the "What does it feel like to fly over planet Earth" video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74mhQy...

Obscene number of exclamation marks = Troll.

These are extremely long exposures, that's why the earth has that green hue (aside from the auroras themselves), and why you can actually see stars. Additionally, the other reason you can see stars is the fact that the sun, which is usually reflecting off the Earth's Atmosphere, is on hidden by the Earth itself in these shots.

Je ne parle pas français. But I can get the gist behind what you said. The green tint in the atmosphere is apparently caused by a low level of light reflecting off (and likely the same solar particles that cause the Auroras to form still interacting with the atmosphere in lower densities), and being captured by the camera capture time. If the camera were to take regular photos so it looked like what most people expected it to look like from space, you wouldn't see any of the stars either.

It was taken with a Digital SLR of somesort (My Money is on Nikon from what I've been reading), so the original resolution was over 4000x2700 If I recall correctly, I'd have to look at the originals on my hard drive at home to be sure.

yes it's way sped up. I do wish they had a real time video where the aurora would move reeeaallly slowly, but the file size would be huge.
