Antifascists and antiracists gathered in Edinburgh outside the Princes Mall early in the morning prior to setting off on a demonstration to ensure that the fascist SDL did not get to march and preach their hate on Edinburgh streets. Some antiracists travelled from Glasgow and owing to a rail strike over safety issues on a new Glasgow-Edinburgh line they arrived by coach instead. So as well as police and antifascists keeping an eye on the train station exits there were also RMT pickets.
Antiracist activists and police were everywhere looking out for fascists. Some racists were nabbed as soon as they arrived and were promptly sent packing. Police were also deployed in great numbers to keep an eye on the antifascists too as they were concerned about disruption to traffic and any potential trouble. As there was no official permission for a march on the roads police tried to keep the marchers on the pavements as far as possible. At one stage it looked as though the police were going to "kettle" i.e. split the demonstrators into smaller groups surrounded by police but they only partially did this insofar as they prevented them from advancing right down to the bottom of one of the roads but still let demonstrators out one side or back the way. The demonstration departed from the gathering point outside the shopping centre in Princes St and marched along the pavement in Princes St amid much chanting and paused for a while at the other end of the gardens where there were some antiracist stalls. Then the march continued uphill with more chanting and waving of banners and placards. Traffic was brought to a halt over the other side of the hill and the numbers of police increased at that point. This video shows the march up to that point. Later on in video part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lm7yJmq-hIc the march splits into those who want to go to an anti-racist rally and those who are determined to see off the SDL.
The anti-racist rally was scheduled for the early afternoon back in the gardens near Princes St and attended mainly by the mainstream political parties, trade unions and religious organisations. Some of the demonstrators left early to attend the rally and the remaining anti-fascists stayed on the demo, determined to reach the EDL and make sure that the fascists did not get a chance to march. This caused a bit of friction between some demonstrators in the early afternoon as one well-known anti-racist campaigner tried to persuade the others to come back to where the rally was to be held. They carried on marching then at one point where the police tried to kettle people, one group ran ahead, disappeared out of sight round a corner while the others held back, some behind a police line and some dodging them. Some were persuaded to come back to the rally. The ones that ran ahead can be seen in part 2 at the bottom of the street separated from where the SDL were drinking by a police barrier.
Some chants at the beginning of the march included: "Unemployment and inflation are not caused by immigration. Bullshit, come off it! The enemy is profit!"

@JakRock My ''arguement''?? It was'nt an arguement m8. I was just stating the FACT that when i watch these types of videos that around 90% of the lefty types seem to have long crusty looking hair and cheap dirty looking clothes. There must be a reason for this.? Was just wondering what it was?

@macaly1 I've got a shaved head mate. Your arguement's fucking shite.
Back to school for you.

A message from the quran to the UAF, from your mates the muslim extremists, who you stick up for so much.
Of the Unbelievers: Sura 4:89 “seize them and slay (kill violently) them wherever you find them: and in any case take no friends or helpers from their ranks.”
