ANCHOR:
Over the past few days, continuous rainfall has swelled the Yamuna River, almost five feet above the danger level -- with no end in sight. As a result, rescue efforts are being severely hampered. Let's take a closer look.

STORY:
Today, for the first time in five years, the Yamuna River overflowed the danger mark. The river waters have swamped fields along the river bed and many houses have been submerged, forcing people to take shelter on their roofs tops.

Villagers are clearly upset with the way the state authorities are dealing with rescue and relief efforts in the affected areas.

[Tarun Kumar, Local Resident]:
"Yesterday water flooded our village. Many people are trapped inside including women and children. No help has come so far, despite us informing the authorities."

Villagers are struggling to cope with the situation.

[Akhtatri Begum, Local Resident]:
"There is no provision for us. Everybody is very troubled."

To make matters worse, the weather bureau is forecasting more rain.

Every year, monsoon rains leave a trail of death and destruction across India, adversely affecting the economy of a largely agricultural region.
