At the mouth of the Amazon River, a murder trial is taking place. The victim Sister Dorothy Stang, a 73-year-old Catholic nun from Dayton, Ohio was shot six times at point blank range. The events that led to her death, and the trials that follow, reveal the larger battle being fought for the future of the rainforest.

With unprecedented access to both sides of the conflict, this gripping documentary follows the real-life drama at the trials of Dorothys killers, while exploring the conflicts in the Amazon that led to that fateful day.

Narrated by Martin Sheen. Original song by Grammy-nominated Brazilian singer/songwriter Bebel Gilbert.

WINNER! Grand Jury Prize & Audience Award, SXSW Film Festival

  • On the other hand. That region is a very poor region. Those people can barely survive. And biology tells us that when animals (poor people are not animals, but let me put it this way, they are less sophisticated) share a space with limited resources , predation ensues.

So from nobody knows where here comes an elderly woman. And she starts telling people what to do (good intentioned as she was).

She starts to exert some pressure to improve things.

    But some people will lose.

    They will react.

It was a rich landowner who hired the people that shot her.

  • I've met people who say they've transformed their communities by running for office locally and overthrowing the corrupt politicians out of their towns. More good people need to run. I'll be running someday. Thanks.

Well, the fact that I wrote "let me put it this way" before writing the word "sophisticated" clearly means that I'm not comfortable with the term and that I used it because I couldn't find a better one by the time I wrote my commentary.

I'm not as judgemental as you seem to imply.

  • @Mottahead Indeed. You are right, but still, i think you didn't understand fully what i'm trying to say. The point is that they are not less sophisticated. And those who can do damage with only a signature aren't more sophisticated. You can't measure who is "better" by the influence they have. Just because someone is rich/powerful, doesn't mean that they are respectful, honorable or ethic. Those who can meet these requirements are "more sophisticated", regardless of wealth or influence.

  • @MrLino

Well, my point is that when people have their basic needs taken care of (food, shelter, health care, safety) they are less prone to engage in violence.

And you are right - more sophisticated people do much more damage with a signature than someone with a gun.

  • @Mottahead You just said that poor people can be compared to animals because they are "less sophisticated"? Aren't you an animal? Isn't Bill Gates a mammal? What makes you capable of judging who is and who is not "less sophisaticated"? Just because they don't fit your lifestyle and have your ambitions? You make me sad.

  • I am Brazilian and Brasil is a wonderful country: nice weather, nice people, nice food, rich culture.

Yet the political class and the powers that be are extremely corrupt and exploitative.

I think that as Brasil is hosting a World Cup and the Olympic Games it is about time that our woes come to the surface, so that there might be internal and international pressure to change things.

Brasil without corruption, with low crime rates and real social mobility?

    Paradise on earth.
