@TheFlanker35 I disagree, because of the repeal of G-S act, large banks like citigroup practiced risky derivative trading that had been strictly forbidden, before. Bundling up home loans and selling them on W.S. created a housing bubble, and when the whole thing burst, US taxpayers were saddled with more than a trillion dollars in bailouts. This ruined the economy, which has still not recovered, and millions of people around the globe have been adversely affected. With no accountability at all.
@zombiefan011 You're correct 1987, was a strange time to make this movie, as serious change in the USSR was already in a state of inertia. Actually the origins of this movie is in reaction to 1983's abc movie, The Day After. US conservatives were angered that TV was airing a movie that made nuclear war look bad (like duh), and demanded a 'rebuttal movie', and hence Amerika. I read an interview with the director who said that the Soviet occupation was symbolic of our own political apathy.
What? The Glass-Steigel Act repeal hurt our banking sector and its repeal was fantastic. The US went bankrupt because of long wars overseas, low tariffs/high income taxes, and a vicious hostility to industry.
1987 was a weird time to make a miniseries about the Soviets taking over the US i mean Russia wasn't even like this in 1987 Gorbachov was basically trying to undo communism at the time this show has an interesting idea but still it seems a little off
@GSPatton89 Actually we went bankrupt because of the free enterprise: after Bill Graham & Bill Clinton removed the Glass-Steigel Act and other New Deal regulations that let the banks eat themselves alive. So, if we still had the regulations in place we would have saved capitalism from the exploits of the capitalists.

The sad thing is that parade they show is more lively and interesting to look at than most Fourth of July parades I've seen in recent years

You traded away free enterprise for government economic overhaul, how could we not go bankrupt?
