I saw it last night and it tore me up. I keep telling people they will not believe how deeply invested in the character Rourke is. You're so right about his performance being an organic work of art. He was sublime.
@SupHobagg In the early 90's he had a boxing career where he had some serious face damage (spilt tongue, among other stuff) and therefore had some face operations on the nose and cheek, i believe. And he got older...57 now.
Like Ellen Burstyn before him, Mickey Rourke was robbed of an Oscar. Aronofsky has directed two of the most memorable and pitch perfect characters who get the Spirit award, but are snubbed at the Academy. Sean Penn gave a great impersonation of Harvey Milk, but that - to my thinking is not acting.
It's the same as Hank Williams III not being accepted in NAshville. If you're too real and don't play by the rules the establishment will fuck you. Rourke not winning the Academy Award simply validates the bankrupt nature of the institution.
The Academy has totally blown its credibility. The more and more people who see "The Wrestler" the more transparent the Oscars become. Say, I'm a political liberal, but I hate political correctness and I think a work of art should be judged on its own merits, not on the cause it professes. Rourke took acting to another whole level - and he did it playing a wrestler. The Golden Globes got it right.

And he is so right about Eric Roberts.
