Phil Lynott went on a solo tour during a break from Thin Lizzy's 1983 Farewell tour and took with him John Sykes and Brian Downey from Lizzy, as well as two future members of Grand Slam (Mark Stanway and Doish Nagle) to do some gigging. This unit was known as the "Three Musketeers".

"A Night in the Life of A Blues Singer" was a track first recorded by Thin Lizzy back in 1978, but was never on any official release and was only played live by Lizzy once (Reading Festival 1983). Lynott and crew play a blistering version of it here, with John Sykes leading the way on guitar. This is taken from the "Live in Sweden" disc, recorded 8/15/1983.

  • I would like to hear a version of this without John Sykes... just to hear the difference in the guitar, maybe it will be less flashy.

  • There's the '78 demo with Gary Moore and the '85 B-Side of Nineteen, also with Moore. I've never posted either one...perhaps I'll post the demo of it.

  • Sabfan, would you by any chance know where I could get a CD with this song on it- not the live version, the studio recording.

    Thanks.

  • I think the VKWA boxset is the only 'official' place where you can get the studio version of this song. I'm not quite sure about European releases.

Other than that, you'd have to look for the original "Nineteen" single from '85.

  • There's definitely a studio version of this. It was recorded in 78/79, but didn't appear (I think) until the 12 inch version of Phil's "Nineteen" 1985 single - it's ok, but the best version is the 1983 BBC Concert CD. That 83 concert also has great sound by the way.

  • Yep, I have the version off that single and the version that was played at Reading for the BBC concert. All the versions are quite good.

  • Great song , who's on keys?

  • omg, this is the best thing i've ever heard......

  • @whitbyjet65

Lynott always said he was an Irish man ,He maybe have been born in Uk but he was brought up and lived in Ireland and was a proud irishman,

  • @lugnasa29 They weren't an Irish band! They had Scotsmen, Englishmen & Americans in various line-ups. Infact Phil Lynott was actually born in England and had a Brazilian father. Stop this childish crap about them being Irish. They were the best band ever but it doesn't matter where they came from.

  • @blacksabfan Ye man but it's no where near as extreme as this version here.

  • I've got two versions of this song live and recorded both of them grand slam cd's and both of them very hard to find took me years searching all the small cd shops of dublin i never shop online but would try looking up grand slam cds
