The Blake's Hitch is an ascending knot commonly used by arborists and tree climbers in general. It should only be used on arborist rope. Used for ascending, it is also used for descending as well.
when anchoring in to a carabiner it is advised to tie in with a chinch knot, like the anchor knot so there is no possibility of the knot sliding down and side loadind your biner with the chance of it opening..a chinch not tightens down on the biner making it harder to slip.
When I rocket out of a tree I burn up nothing cause I use a repelling tool not a prusik or a blake. A good prusik is better than a blake hitch. With a prusik it's like having two flip lines. I used to use a blake hitch until I got smart. I never have to cut off any of my climb line, I just replace the prusik which is much less expensive. Also, I have a blast repelling quickly to the ground and my rope does not burn pulling through the tree. Nothing burns not even the tree.
@pauljrsdad ..nah,maybe after many, many climbs tying in on the same spot you may get some noticeable wear..simply change ends or cut it off...if you insist on rocketing yourself to the ground out of tall trees and burnin up your gear, you should learn to relax a little.
I put the first 2 turns around my thumb, then stack 2 more on top above my thumb, when I withdraw my thumb I can sneak the tail up thru easier..Blake's is better than the old skool tautline..but nothin wrong with old school..dont need a bagfull of fancy shmancy to get up a tree, aye boys.
no, its the' blake' hitch,, named after dude who made it.. its a great knot,, doesnt roll out.. got have it in the bag of tricks,, never know when you might forget your prussik at the last job

It's a Dutch bowline when finished outside.

He tied the bowline wrong. The tail is supposed to be finished on the inside of the loop not the outside, like this video shows.

The prusik is qicker and safer. The blake hitch burns the rope and ruins your climb line. You can throw away a prusik if you burn it.

Good vid, you can tie a pussic using a single rope like you have for the Blakes hitch, you dont need a loop, though it does give you more friction.

Best vid yet for the uninitiated on the use of the Blake's hitch. I hear about cautions for use of this knot.. any thoughts?
