Christian is an avid surfer. We were able to do wavefront guided LASIK with the Intralase to create a thin flap in his right eye (-9D)but his left was too nearsighted (-12D) so we inserted a phakic lens implant 2 years ago. He now has 20/15 vision in the right and 20/12 in the left and is very happy with the quality of vision in both eyes, not favoring one over the other.

  • Hi Again. It is true that the phakic lens is reversible. Although the risks of both procedures are low, working inside the eye runs the remote risk of infection which could cause loss of the eye. Also increases the risk of a cataract which could cause another surgery to repair it. PRK for -3 D is highly successful and with very low risk so you should consider it if you don't want LASIK

  • Hi, I would not recommend a phakic lens for only -2.5 if your corneal exam is normal. The lens does come in a power of -3 D. You don't have to have LASIK if you are concerned about the flap. You can have PRK, which is a procedure I have performed for over 20 years. You are most likely a good candidate for a PRK. Phakic lenses have a higher risk than a PRK. Dr. Salz

  • HI at -9 you can usually have either LASIK or Phakic lens. Christian was -9 in his right eye and had LASIK but -12 in the left eye and we did the phakic lens. Tell me where you live and I can recommend a surgeon to evaluate you Dr. Salz

  • @aschmitke i had mine on Friday and back to work on tuesday :P and monday was a holiday no pain at all

  • Hey I had a question. What is the maximum myopia prescription you can do LASIK on?

  • I am not a candidate for lasik or PRK, my prescription is -12 and -11, IOL was recommend to me but I'm wondering about the recovery period (how long it takes, and is it very painful?). Any information is greatly appreciated!

  • @drsalz I dont know if you do the phakic lens procedures, but when it comes down to it, someone with vision of -3.00 D, which would you reccomend (lens vs PRK)? By the way, My vision is -2.5D so as of now I'm not eligible for a phakic lense. Another Q, what would happen if you had a lens put in with a prescription higher than needed?

  • @drsalz How would phakic lenses have a higher risk? Other than the fact of the surgery actually being in the eye, Because if it goes wrong, you can remove the lense, Cant put "meat" on your eyeball after PRK.

  • I have -2.50, still in highschool though, does this mean I can't get Phakic lenses? I dont want a laser on my eye.
