Zortman Landusky Pegasus Heap Leach Cyanide Gold Mine

This is a clip taken from a documentary we produced at MCAT public access television in Missoula Montana in 1993.

We captured the footage and interviews on location at the Ft. Belknap Indian Reservation.

Since that time the Zortman Landusky Gold Mine operation closed when the Pegasus Gold Corporation filed for Bankrupsy leaving Montana with yet another massive Superfund Site and dangerous ground water pollution problem.

The Pegasus Gold Corporation (a Candadian Company) obtained the land without royalty through the use of the 1872 mining law and left the US tax payers footing the bill for a massive cleanup which will never end.

Our government should have these companies take measures which are inspected stage by stage, during their operations.

The fact these people are able to proceed with these types of operations, and no FURTHER measures are taken to ensure the safety of the homes around these areas... is a HUGE slap in the face to 'we the people'.

Well after we filmed our documentary (this video is a short exerpt) the Mine filed for bankrupsy turning it into another very large super fund site.

Water flowing from that mine now has to be treated indefinately. Not only did they destroy the land and poison the water they also failed to reclaim it by going bankrupt and left the people living in that area with the mess.

From wat I've herd from my Dad, I EXTREAMLY comanated the drinking water on the Rez.
