A recent inductee into the Country Music Hall Of Fame, Ferlin was born in Flat River, Mo, and entered the Merchant Marines during WW2 where his ship took part in the D-Day invasion of Cherbourg. Upon discharge from the service, he went into the entertainment business, first as a disc jockey, using other names like Terry Preston and Simon Crum. When he signed a recording contract with Capitol Records, they convinced him to revert to his given name of Ferlin Husky. "Gone" was the song that started his career, crossing over to the pop charts peaking at #4 in March of 1957.
