Alot of my male LDS friends mess around with the moustache, beard, goattee, and nutty haircut business in their youth. They really cannot do a whole lot of craziness in their personal lives, that isn't forbidden. It is an acceptible way to express their individuality, and is not frowned upon by their LDS brethren.
