As requested :) Our very own Edith Piaf (she starred as Edit Piaf in the homonymous theatrical play, staged Summer 1981 in Athens, Greece), Greek actor/singer Tania Tsanaklidou represents us at the ESC with a song dedicated to the memory of the late Charles Chaplin, who had died the previous year. The result was the 8th position and a slight shift of Tania's career to a bit more contemporary repertoire for the following years, with numerous hits and beautiful songs, unlike the recordings from '73 till then.
Oh, and... rumour has it (my parents actually had told me so) that at the end of this song she took good advantage of the live European broadcast to quickly declare her love to her then sweetheart and famous actor. Fair enough, may I say!

There he comes, from the corner of the street
with his black assorted hat
filling us with a childish fear
that the policeman might bust him

A red carnation on his lapel
a cane, an old tuxedo and some sorrow
no cigarettes left in his pack
and the rain has just begun

Charlie Chaplin, come into our dreams and make us laugh
Charlie Chaplin, tonight's what's left for us to see
Charlie Chaplin, dreams are silent, like your films
Charlie Chaplin, let us live your stories once again

Cruel employers and customers
that's Charlot's society
a life full of illusions
a life full of warm smiles
and the longer the film lasted
the further I was carried away
Oh Lord, long live the tramps
Oh Lord, long live humanity!

Sweet or what? :)

  • And a bit of trivia on the song:

The music was composed by Sakis Tsilikis and the lyrics were written by Yiannis Xanthoulis, who later became one of Greece's most important and best-selling novelists. At the time, Tsilikis and Xanthoulis were known for their collaboration on children plays and shows for the Greek TV.

  • @Manolara84 Charlie chaplin died in 1977, a year before this contest was held.

Michael Jackson regained his popularity when he died. Probably the same case for this.

  • Here he comes round the corner with a matching small black hat, our childhood anxiety, will the police officer get him? Red carnation on the lapel, cane, tuxedo and woe, a carton empty of cigarettes, and now rain is falling from the sky. Charlie Chaplin come to our dream so that we can have a laugh, Charlie Chaplin tonight whatever we manage to see, Charlie Chaplin the dream silent like your films, Charlie Chaplin let us live your stories again, Charlie Chaplin, Charlie Chaplin
