@dinnerstein you mean similar to persian setar, both setar (three string) , saz (instrument) are farsi words. and yes, the indian sitar was developed from that

Yes, this is the Afghani sehtar, which is related to the Turkish saz. (Seh=three, tar=string). It might have been combined with the Indian tri-tantri veena by the great poet/musician Amir Khusrau to develop the Indian sitar. They have a similar instrument in Kashmir that they use for performing Sufiana Kalam.
