The Famine in Ukraine Movie

In 1932-33, Ukraine, the breadbasket of Europe, had bountiful crops of grain, yet its people were dying of starvation. In order to crush the will of the independent-minded Ukrainian peasants and secure collectivization of all Ukrainian lands, Joseph Stalin ordered an army of ruthless, Communist Party activists to confiscate all harvested grain and seize all the foodstuffs in the villages. As a result of this genocidal decree, by the end of 1933 nearly 25 percent of the Ukrainian population - up to 10 million people, including 3 million children - had perished! In the face of terror, Ukrainians had little possibility of escaping their horrific fate to create another life elsewhere. Travel was banned for Ukrainians keeping them confined in a prison of starvation within their own villages.

It's sad that the worst tragedy of the 20th C. has been suppressed for so long. Even now, after the fall of the Soviet Union, most people have never heard of the Holodomor. It's our duty to the memory of these innocent people to put this horror into the consciousness of the world.

Your video was well done, the music was right for that desperate and sad event. I am mournful to the depths of my soul to see my people treated with such utter disregard. Stalin and his comisars have met their maker, perhaps they're starving eternally now with no hope of even dying, maybe they live the life and death of each person they made to starve during that infamous time.

This was a great tragedy. We should however bear in mind that the details are disputed by reputable historians. It is clear that several millions died but a lot of those were outside the Ukraine. Also, many of the data and pictures commonly employed relate to an earlier famine occurring across the Soviet Union in 1921-22 which was brought on by the Russian Civil War, the legacy of WWI and by German occupation. Also it could very well have been incompetence, not genocide.

Well done. Emotionally heartbreaking especially in your use of the historical photos - wish you had used more - but perhaps more would have made the video more like propaganda, less a memorial to the Holodomar - would have inspired hate rather than grief. Thank you.

[Incidentally, Snyder in his "Bloodlands" believes the number of dead to have been 3.5 million - provides a well-documented argument for this number - but it does not matter - the death of even one child would be one too many]
