This is footage of Big Creek shortly after the breakage of an ice dam somewhere upstream of the Taylor Wilderness Research Station, December 18th, 2008, at roughly 3:30 PM MST. TWRS is located in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, Idaho. Big Creek is the largest tributary of the Middle Fork of the Salmon River.

TWRS is operated by the University of Idaho. This event took place while staff were changing batteries on a NOAA solar array, used to monitor movements of PIT-tagged salmonids in the stream.

We do not know how far upstream the ice dam was from our location. The river had been running very low due to a week of temperatures in the single digits, freezing much of the streamflow. Following this event, water level increased by several feet in less than a minute, and continued for several hours.
