Seattle Fire Department Engine 2 and Ladder 4 being dispatched and responding to 1000 Aurora Avenue North at 1547 on 12/26/08. Engine 2 went on 3,501 runs during 2007, making it the busiest Engine company in the department. Ladder 4 went on 2,133 runs during 2007, making it the busiest Truck company in the department. My apologies for how shaky the video is after the companies leave the station (I guess I got a little excited!). Quartered in Station 2 are Engine 2, Ladder 4, Aid 2, Aid 82, and Safety 2.

  • Why does it sound like dispatch is a computer? Is it a computer, or is the dispatcher just talking like that? lol

  • Hi and thanks for the question. The SFD has gone to a computer generated audio on its dispatch channel. I know of at least one other major department that uses this system: the Dallas Fire Dept. The system is just used for the initial dispatch. All following communication between responding companies and dispatch is with real people. The main benefits are as follows: 1). dispatch is very clear and easy to understand, 2) "stacking" of several dispatches can take place (cont.) ...

  • ... (cont.). With "stacking", the dispatchers can focus on things like deciding which companies should be assigned to different runs instead of spending time verbally making the dispatches. This is particularly valuable during busy call periods. One disadvantage of the system is that the voice mispronounces certain street names, such as "Oregon" ... it's O-re-Gun, no O-re-GON. :) The Dallas FD uses the exact same system, and it's interesting because the voice is clearly not from Texas.

  • This is a great video....This is one of the neatest firehouses I have ever visited...oldschool firehouse where the old Gamewell gongs sound out each run, lots of pride and tradition here. Good example, thanks for posting. Also enjoy hearing the radio traffic.

  • Thanks a lot. I'd like to hear the Gamewell gongs inside the station. SFD Stn 2 also has a horn that beeps outside the station for the first ~5 seconds after the call comes in - I think it's to warn peds and vehicles. You can vaguely hear it on this video - that's how I knew the station had a call coming in and to start taping. Portland F&R stns start flashing a strobe light the instant a call comes in - that way you know a call is coming even if dispatch is sending out another call.

  • Nice vid and comentary

  • Thanks very much. I appreciate that.

  • 240p we meet again...

  • @Acedo probably not lol and he needs to work on keeping that camera stable and talking slower that boys nervous as shit

  • @Acedo probably not lol

  • @cbj8fan I would like to know this too, are you even a firefighter? haha

  • do you sit in front of the stations and wait for them to get runs? lol

  • Any apparatus designated as a "truck" or "ladder" with a certain number of total feet of ground ladders and an aerial ladder, tractor drawn or straight frame can and is called a ladder or a truck.

  • In Vancouver, Washington, they are referred as Trucks

  • The "box" I am referring to is painted in front of the station so cars know not to stop in front and not block the station.

  • when Station 2's doors open, all lights within 2 blocks turn red.
