Please look at "flame retardant biodegradable sky lanterns" on youtube. this might be what some of the sightings really are.
these lanterns are quite sizeable.

Tonight, San Jose Ca. - Saw the EXACT same thing!! (Would NOT have believed, if had not seen myslf!!!!) - When I noticed it, it was in the southern sky (moon slightly to left & higher, but noticed cuz of stars sorta around it.. thought it was just bright orange star.. but it moved, & glowed - dimming & lightingback up again).... It was moving up it seemed.. Up & kinda eastish.. Then it settled altitude, floated past moon (little below), moving north.. then kinda curved a little north/westish.

@Guitarlicks4u2 Hey, I saw an orange ball of light in the 80's. I was so close to it that I could have hit it with a rock !! It was about 20 feet wide and hovering next to the hi-way in Washington State, I reported it to NUFORC. What do you think it was u saw ??? I wish I knew what I saw was !!!

i SAW ONE TOO ON 4TH OF JULY NO LIE EXEPT I WAS ON VACATION IN MARTIN TN ...AND IT WAS BIG ORANGE AND BLINKING I GOT SOME OF IT ON FILM BUT ITS NOT GOOD QUALITY ... CRAZYYY!!
