How does it work?
This simple toy machine worked using the principles of applied physics and engineering. A hovercraft is a vehicle lifted by air cushion which requires static pressure and airflow from Bernoulli's equation. Static pressure multiplied by the skirt area gives you lift.
The air is pressurized and sends to the right channel to create the cushion below, thus producing an air pressure below the skirt. The disc provides a flat surface to distribute the air beneath its surface. With the right velocity, air should be able to create a film or layer below. When that happens, pressure is building up. Notably, air is a fluid molecule. In fluid mechanics, velocity of fluid increases when an orifice opening is decreased, thus the small holes of the disc increase the velocity of the air coming out, creating a strong lift.
It is also noted that the toy hovercraft tend to move in thrusting motions. This is because the resistance force of friction is greatly reduced when the smooth surface of the disc is lifted up from the table/ground and thus coming in contact with the air, hence the frictional force is lesser.
