With some experimenting I also found out that it's rarely a good idea to upload a FLV to YouTube. Even though it seems that this would circumvent the encoding YouTube actually has a lot more problems with this than you think.

I normally stay with MP4, it just seems to work out best.

The sound quality is because of Youtube deciding that my raw FLV file needed further compression...

And the license plate thing was just something the owner asked me to do. I did it quickly and never bothered fixing it up.
