In this 2-part oral history interview televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker-Messner talks about her childhood desire to become an evangelist. She describes meeting her future husband Jim Bakker at bible college and their subsequent collaboration as traveling evangelists. She details their discovery by Pat Robertson, and how they were launched on the fledging Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN). She speaks about their children's show, The Jim and Tammy Show, as well as Jim's tenure as host of The 700 Club. She then discusses their creation of Trinity Broadcasting and their eventual split with their co-founders, which led to the formation of the PTL Club. Although she does not discuss the subsequent "PTL scandal," she speaks of the devastation it left on her life. She also talks about The Jim J. and Tammy Faye Show and her appearance on The Surreal Life.

  • I was saved in 1979 while watching PTL..

Tammy Faye said Jesus loves you, really loves you. It was a revelation to me that He did love me. I repented and he saved me. Since then, I know the PTL did many things that were not right. So I am sure Tammy and Jim had tthings to repent for.

Their sins are between them and God. Who am I to judge anyone. I am a forgiven sinner too. Thank God for His mercy and grace! If he could forgive me, I know He will forgive anyone.

  • I just found it....We're Blessed. Love that song....

  • God bless her soul. She was a goodhearted person she supported the gay community and had love for them instead of hate. In an "industry" where that was not a popular attitude among her close peers I'm sure. Jim Bakker now he's another story. What a shlub. My heart goes out to Jim and Tammy's children the scandal and Tammy's death must have been very hard on them.

  • Aww, I miss her! I knew her from the scandals, makeup, etc. since I was a kid..... it wasn't 'til 'the eyes of tammy faye' that i truly saw her as the beautiful person she was. I'm an agnostic, but if there IS a heaven, I sure hope she's there.

  • I liked Tammy Faye. She was no push-over, she was what she was-take her or leave her. She seemed sincere, and she always appear to be so kind.

  • I thought she was a lovely woman but she doesnt seem to happy here. I think she must have been sick here and maybe was unaware of it.

  • january 19th? when was this interview

  • I used to watch her for "shock value". I thought "What is she trying to sell now?". You don't know what you have until you lose it. She is intelligent, ahead of her time and a Christian in the true sense of the word.

  • love her accent.

  • I found a great picture with Jim and Tammy standing next to the gospel singer Mahalia Jackson. . . her career spans many generations and she made a deep impression on many people in many ways. She was a genuine soul, who stood up against the Religious Right and defended principles. . . not dogma.

  • Tammy is with Jesus now . It does not matter about her life here, but she was a good witness for him .
