'So Blue'.
Jack Payne & His Hotel Cecil Orchestra.
Vocal Chorus by Jack Payne.
Recorded London, May 9th 1927.

A melancholy waltz hit of 1927 but no doubt just the thing for late night revellers in the Hotel Palm Court to nearly round off the evening's dancing. The grand old Hotel Cecil was nearing the end of it's very exsistence when this recording was made although nobody really would have known it at this time.

In a few years the Hotel Cecil would become just a grand memory and Jack Payne would go on to become one of the most famous and popular dance band leaders of them all - The BBC years followed!.

  • After Jack left the Hotel Cecil, Marius B. Winter took over as resident bandleader for a few months. He issued a few records on Homochord, As you say, this is a melancholy waltz, it features a heart-felt vocal by Jack. When you consider what passes for "singing" these days, this is in fact a most apt and reflective vocal and delivered very much with a feeling for the song.

Good to hear a Jack Payne waltz for a change. Always good to hear a Jack Payne vocal!

  • Jack is my favourite vocalist of course. Capable, clear and just himself, not trying to be anyone else AND not trying to be American!.

  • Isn't that a lovely ending! So blue! There is almost a hint of a BBC dance orchestra arrangement in the prominent sax section; Jack's voice, of course, adds to that feeling but I wonder who the arranger is? I must say I've never heard Jack hit such low notes - makes a nice change and he displays a good vocal range. Nice record, laddie.

  • Wonderful thanks

  • Terrific to hear Payne's Cecil band.Although this is about his worst ever vocal.Great upload, thanks.NB the arched entrance to hotel survives
