Links and Information

This is a great system for winter camping. Don't worry about those small openings in the tent, as the amount of heat put off by this stove will keep you warm, and burn a minimal amount of wood. Literally 2 or 3 good size logs split into 3rds or quartered will make it through the night. If those same logs were in an open camp fire, with any amount of wind would be gone in about an hour. Very impressed and happy with this setup. Only changes were sanding down the factory paint, coating with a better high temp paint. Making legs shorter, and setting the whole thing atop a cookie sheet, then using a small can to catch ashes at small clean out hole at rear bottom. Bonus here also is that this stove comes with a metal poker, and rake.

Mil-Spec Plus Great Northern Camp Stove link - just wanted to give you a link to where you might pick one of these great little stoves up. I purchased mine at a local army surplus store.

After I purchased this stove, I have seen some really nice homemade stoves using ammo cans. If you can't afford $100 for one of these Mil-Spec stoves, you could make your own for about a 3rd of the cost.

Army surplus tents are CHEAP! and one of the best places I think to find them are on Ebay. You can usually get a complete (2 halves, with all stakes, and poles) shipped to your door for as little as $25 as of this writing. You can sometimes find new never used for around $40 shipped.

The tarp I just picked up at a local farm and tractor store in the tarp section.

Thanks for watching!

  • If your considering buying this milspec, don't. I bought one lucky only paid $50 new for it, and let me tell u it is poor design. Who designes a stove with only 2.5" diameter?! That is retarded. Smoke will fill your tent. Impossible to boil water with a round top. The 2 pipes that hang on the side have to function at all. Oh wait, the gate handle folds out so that u can dry your wet socks - give me a fck'n break. If u do buy it, I hope ur handy with a welder. Buy a proper stove like the Kni-co.

  • How did u prevent the stove pipe from touching the canvas and lighting it on fire?

  • You can purchase high temp paint. I have used it on my grill. I believe it is 1200 degree maybe higher. Like your set up.
