The Great Egg Race - Theme

TV theme from the much loved and missed late 1970's and early 80's BBC geeky strategy show. Presented by the wonderful Professor Heinz Wolf the early series had teams of bearded futtocks who had to create machines out of washing up bottles and sticky back plastic to transport an egg from one side of the studio to the other as fast as possible without breaking it. Later series saw more human teams with ever more elaborate tasks to complete within a tight time frame with very limited resources.

The show could be said to have spawned the less well remembered "Now Get Out Of That" which saw teams out in the freezing inhospitable british countryside messing about with oil drums and black bin liners to create rafts ...amongst many other boy scout tasks...

It could also be said it was the pre-cursor to the much loved "The Adventure Game" and later the Crystal Maze...and the rather bland by comparison Scrapheap Challenge

I know it's not going to change the course of history but I can confirm that the staccato sound wasn't created on a prepared piano. An "ARP Pro Soloist" used to go a long way, especially if you double-tracked it or recorded with the multi-track running at half speed, or both. No idea why they don't repeat the show, but RWD and I did write the music. MC.

My favourite TV theme ever, by a long chalk. Very much in thrall to "Before And After Science"-era Brian Eno, I think, and all the better for it. Wouldn't mind an MP3 of it, should one actually exist.
