Bill Stewart was a reporter for ABC news who was summarily shot by government forces in Nicaragua.

Stewart was originally from West Virginia, and was a 1963 graduate of Ohio State University. An experienced foreign correspondent, Stewart had been in Nicaragua for a month reporting on the civil war between the American-backed government and the leftist Sandinistas.

On June 20, 1979 Stewart was travelling in a van in the capital city of Managua with his camera crew when they were stopped at a checkpoint run by the National Guard, the main force of President Anastasio Somoza Debayle.
FDR once remarked of Nicaragua's dictator, "Somoza may be a son of a bitch, but he's our son of a bitch." So when a later Somoza (the son of our son of a bitch) was overthrown in 1979, we spared no effort until Nicaragua was ours again.
When President Carter saw that the younger Somoza's days were numbered, he tried to ease him out of power, unaware that retired CIA agents were providing him with further weaponry. Carter's plan was to keep Somoza's private army, the National Guard, in power, while Somoza escaped to enjoy his $900 million fortune.

  • I never understood why Washington has hated Nicaragua so much. Walker invaded in the 19th century, marines invaded twice in the 20th, and then installed a puppet government that never cared for the people. It's hard to get up when you are getting frequently beat up by a bigger kid. My heart goes out to the Nicaraguan people.

  • there is no democracy or freedom down there...only republican and corruption. fighting and unrest riots,im Nicaraguan-American and the last time i went there was in 2009 when Ortega was in power but i dont want to go back until Ortega steps down from office. he was president in the 80s. 2006 and now today (reelections from a couple months ago but won by fraud) which means he has officially violated the constitution. now its all a dictatorship.

  • @CaliOrangeCounty "Under Fire" directed by Roger Spottiswoode.

  • Daniel Ortega overthrew the corrupt, brutal Somoza regime. 30 years later Ortega is elected and becomes as corrupt as Somoza.

    Power corrupts.

  • I concur, but he was still worthless piece of human being who got what he deserved. Kind of what Mike Echanis did under Somoza in the late 70s. Just another bucanneer that got what he deserved.

  • @harryged sorry, but walker did not invade the country, he was invited in by nicaraguan politicians who sought his help to boost their side

  • Why does the usa fight against terrorism but support a terrorist group? My uncle fought against the contras
