Suggestion of my YT friend, albertdiner: „yiddish tango" - Papirosen, sung by Zully Goldfarb in a contemporary, Argentine fashion.
First words of the refrain: „Kupitie (...) papirosen !" are actually very close to Polish „Kupcie (...) papierosy !" (Buy...cigarettes !) and may be indicative of factual roots of this moving song performed with such a passion.

Kupitie, koift-zhe koift-zhe papirosen,
Truquene fun regn nit fargosn
Koyft -zhe bilig b'nemones
Koyft un hot oif mir rajmones
Ratevet fun hunguer mij atzind

  • cigarettes in polish is papierosow in yiddish it is papirosn. A cold night, foggy, and darkness everywhere A boy stands sadly and looks around. Only a wall protects him from the rain He holds a basket in his hand and his eyes beg everyone silentlyBuy my cigarettes! Dry ones, not wet from the rain Buy real cheap, Buy and have pity on me. Save me from hunger now Buy my matches, wonderful ones, the best, and with that you will uplift an orphan. My screaming and my running will be for naught.

  • @Nanakommt You can find several translations at zemerl.com. For some reason I can't post the link without youtube giving me an error message.

  • Vielen Dank. Ein trauriges Liedchen, das irgendwie sehr gut zum Tango passt.
