Free Speech or Hate Speech?

It's all free speech to me. This is a topic I've thought hard on my whole life. My recent conversation with Dawahfilms has given me pause to reflect on my position. After careful reflection, and even more so having sought and acquired material for making this video, I remain as convinced as ever than limits to free speech should only be where life or property are directly imperiled by it. Things like state secrets, slander, libel, and so on are under some restrictions already, and with some rationale.

When it comes to "hate speech" the problem I have is that it seems the offended party - whoever that may be - will inevitably draw the line of what constitutes hate speech ever more restrictively against criticism.

The best way to combat bigotry, which is what most hate speech is, is with free expression. When an idiot, and/or a bigot, or other type of extremist are free to speak their mind, we can know who they are. We can more effectively speak against it.

Inciting violence or advocating destruction are my red lines, and even then, there's some leeway. People have to be allowed to freely be angry and express it, but there should not be ill consequences as a result.

Just my 2 cents.

According to your description, you should be against that. IOW, you should be against any advocacy of state action and support the censoring of everyone but anti-statists.

I don't think it's feasible, but in a sane society agitating for "universal healthcare" would be treated for what it is: an incitement of violence.

The best way to combat hate speech is to educate a populace who can readily marginalize it, NOT to make it illegal; for who would YOU allow to choose for you what ideas you can or cannot hear. Watch Hitchens on Freedom of Speech for a more eloquent unraveling of this idea.

Personally I dont believe in hate speech. Its ridiculous. Free speech should not be limited. Hate speech limits it.
