  • DO NOT KEEP THE BEATER AGAINST THE HEAD!!!!! ..... do you have your stick on the head of the drum if you not playin' right now? of course NO! and why the beater? you must find the way to play the pedal, or it will kick you everytime the beater comes back...

  • It's interesting that you note this, but that's just what works for me, or I should say, what used to work for me. I just recently got new drums and the bass drum sounds so good that I have changed my technique so that the beater is NOT against the head. In any case, playing against the head is not 'wrong' in any sense, but it does choke off any resonance you may want. I have my new kick fully resonant (no muffling/pillows etc and the heads tunes very nicely so that a beautiful 'boom' comes out.

  • @Pauliewanna

Agreed 100%. But I should pont out that leaving the beater on the head could pose problems for someone using triggers (it causes false triggering).

I wish people would understand that the only thing "wrong" about how one plays the drums is if they're doing something that is not correct with regard to time or tempo for a particular song, or something that causes physical damage. Past that, it's all about what works best for the drummer and for the song.

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi Well, I don't use triggers and probably NEVER will. Once again, this just one technique and I'm not the only person who does this. But, if you watch a whole song of me playing, you'll see that the beater is not actually against the head for most of the song. It's slightly off as my foot just rests.

  • Don't watch then!

  • That was the most riveting four minutes and twelve seconds I have ever witnessed.

Meh, what does it all matter. You're a f%$&ing phenomenal drummer! LOL

    Keep up the great work!

  • @punkrockdrummer1990

Actually a kick head vibrates more than any other head on the drumset by virtue of how big it is... but you're right, unless you're triggering, it wouldn't make too make of a difference.

  • @666JoeyMaggot666 lol,...what does it matter to you anyway,..well if your kicks are anyfin like joeys they will be triggered an then yer ull set off the next hit lol! but if they arnt triggered then,....so what it may change a slight bit of the sound sometimes,...so what dosnt actualy make it sound bad just more dead,....an isnt that what you want anyway? an to keep a stick against a head is stupid but not a kick drum ,...a kicks head hardly vibrates anyway

  • @Cesabo

If you want to watch someone play, find another video. From the title it should be pretty clear this guy is going to talk and explain things.

  • You took the words out of my mouth. Of course you should not leave the beater against the head.

That might be ok if you have you bass drum stuffed full of pillows, but leaving the beater on the head on a properly tuned bass drum will muffle the sound from the drum.

Point 2. I can't see why you should ever put your heel down. That would be like resting your wrist on the snare drum. Keep it up, learn control just like you do with your hands
