Well, they have fixed expressions, and that raises the creepiness a great deal. And that final shot with the assortment of masks, they're all disembodied "faces" each stuck in its own particular expression, and the combination of pretty good realism with those makes them even more creepy. A caricatured cartoon character, note, has less potential to creep most people out than a super-realistic but clearly not real one. Same with robots that look like people. Note the term "uncanny valley."
