Waterloo - The Battle of Hougoumont Part 1. Waterloo was a complex campaign consisting of many smaller battles. The fight around the little Chateau of Hougoumont was one of the vital parts of the main battle. All credit to the Coldstream/Scots Guards though they were critical in driving the French back and were paramount in saving Hougoumont-and also Wellington.
The success of the battle of Waterloo depended on the shutting of these gates of Hougoumont, remember that.

Napoleon's feint against Hougoumont wasnt just a battle-within a battle, it lasted all day and soaking up 15,000 French troops that would of been useful elsewhere.
But Jerome has to take the blame, if he had listened to his brothers orders by stopping at the wood as he was told it might of faired differently for the French, but instead they attacked the well defended loophole and wall and attempted to break in the great door, which was recessed and resulted in leaving heaps of French dead.
