FFIV - Lowest Level Challenge: Golbez

First of all, yes, I screwed up. Only Yang was supposed to survive this one, so that he could take all the EXP himself, but I didn't realize that until it was too late. However, it seems that I already screwed up this challenge at the Dark Elf, because according to the battle plan, I was supposed to get much less EXP from him. In other words, this isn't a true Lowest Level Challenge anymore, but what the hell. It doesn't make a huge difference.

This battle would have been a piece of cake if you started with a fully healed party, but you don't. You start with Cecil at 50 HP and Rydia at 195. Rydia's return is, of course, one of the most classic moments in Final Fantasy. In order to get the party back on their feet, you need luck with Golbez's first two attacks. Bio must hit Rydia and the next attack must hit Cecil. Any other combination is obliteration and you have to redo the annoying Cal/Brina battle.

Once the party is back on their feet, the rest of the battle is easy. Golbez only has 3000 HP, so it doesn't take very long to kill him. It would have been a little trickier to have only Yang survive, but that's a story for another day. I'll most likely redo the challenge one day and do everything right.

Garland, check out the new FFIV run at SDA for the SNES version. There are a few interesting tricks you may be able to take advantage of, especially with Zeromus's AI.

Zeromus's Wisdom is set to 32 when he queues Big Bang. That's AFTER he shakes. It is set to 15 when he uses Flare as a counterattack. If you throw a Cure1 potion at him after the game queues Big Bang, it'll cause him to counterattack with Flare, resetting his wisdom to 15 before using Big Bang, and drastically reduces the damage.

Yes, you die. I actually had to do the battle twice before I figured that out :S

Ya, on Dark Elf, you're supposed to let him kill himself off with Reflected spells. Then Dark Dragon doesn't appear.

Ah, I see. I figured you would have to make sure he didn't transform into Dark Dragon, but I had no idea how. Anyway, I'll probably redo this challenge next year and do everything right then.

@Oracion As I recall, the only way I've ever got past this section was to have Kain jump at the right time, so he's up in the air when Golbez Calls the Shadow Dragon. That left Kain and Rydia to do what needed to be done. Maybe it's a different situation for the LLC.

This is really epic on what you are doing. I am trying to get the gist of doing a low level challenge. Do you use equipment like armors though, because that is what I am doing.
