As the first LEED-certified YMCA camp building in the nation, Evergreen Lodge lives up to its name. The 5,700 square foot structure is the newest addition to Camp Greenkill, one of three camps within a 1,150 acre campus in Huguenot, N.Y., run by the YMCA of Greater New York. Designed as a lodge and program space for children, adult and family groups that visit the camp year-round for environmental education, conferences, retreats or sports instruction, the building not only hosts groups in an environmentally friendly way but also serves the unique function of providing an interactive educational experience about their stay.
Dedicated in March 2009, the project received gold level LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council for its many sustainable features, including a green roof, geothermal lake loop, recycled materials, low energy consumption and exemplary water usage. The project also received an innovation credit for a unique signage and display program designed to highlight the buildings many features, explain basics of sustainable design and offer green ideas visitors can apply at home.
