This debate is too dumb for words. All kids watched the Flinstones from the start. It aired on Friday nights, cigarrette commercials and all. Most animation in those times were full of adult jokes as well as kids stuff. Big tobacco was there selling their products. No one worried about whether it had an affect on kids, that is all. Same with alcohol. I GREW UP THEN AND YOU ARE ALL WET AND WAY OVER ANALYZING IT.
Ok,point taken,I guess, but what was it?!?! Yes,things aired as adult along with kids, could it have been that everyone assumed that the adults, the parents, had enough responsibility to raise there own kids,to the best of there abilities and didn't rely on the government to do there job?!?! I agree that may not be the case in reality but that has been the case for the last 50,0000 yrs.and probably should remain the rule of law
It originally aired nationally on Friday nights - prime time and everyone watched it, adults and children. We saw the cigarrette commercials all the time, and every brand had a jingle or macho dude like Lee Marvin (Pall Mall) featured. It was normal life.
But I think your "research" claim is fairly dubious. Thank goodness some of us survived from that period to straighten you out.
those were the rumors at the time about smoking....now we know better. I feel a sense of passion in this subject considering you replied 3 times within 10 min. Good for you....keep up the good work.
Yet all us kids couldn't wait to watch it every Friday night. And later on, The Twilight Zone.
Most of the kids cartoons in those days had adult asides that kids missed but they got the up front kid entertainment anyway and it helped the parents cope with having to watch cartoons. See, people usually only had one tv in their homes.
Not so. I remember hearing reports of cancer being caused by second hand smoke when I was 9 in 1961. I once even told me dad that his smoke was probably hurting us as much as him. He didn't say anything - he was a doctor.
I remember these Flinstone Winston commercials. In fact, we played with their jingle - "Winston tastes bad like the one I just had, no flavor no taste, just a 40 cent waste."

Give me a break....
