The claim is that a header on your straight six will gain 20-40% HP and/or torque. In this case, it's definitely true. (I'll get some road dyno footage later, but for now you'll just have to take my word for it.) The carbs initially improved the big end, and it would keep pulling strong as fast as you wanted to turn it. (That's ok if you feel like grenading the engine) There was also hill climbing inprovement due to the larger CFM being able to pack more fuel charge into the cylinder. Ran it with straight pipes off the header for the 8 miles from the farm to the muffler shop. Wide open throttle performance was non-existent. Fell flat on its face. Once the rest of the exhaust system was in place, it was like a completely different engine. Was able to pull the "test grade" without losing any speed, where it used to drop about 7 MPH. Our other "test grade" is "Hayes Hill Intenational Speedway", a 2 mile hill from mile post 14 to 16 on Hwy 199 in Oregon. Went from dropping to 3rd at MP 15 to about 15.75. Now that's truckin'!

  • You'd get another 30 HP without the preachers.

  • @glasshammer52

Yeah, but I can't make it across the finish line without 'em...

  • ?why not just use a good old 2 barrel?

  • @o56kid Constant velocity carbs have no accelerator pumps. Very useful in big bouncy trucks where your foot in constantly bouncing on the pedal. Constant velocity means the the fuel is being pulled out where the air stream is at maximum velocity. This provides for better atomziation than the fixed venturi carb where maximum velocity is only applied to the venturi when at wide open throttle, or near WOT.

  • Whats on it the back ground at 7:00?

  • Very neat and good work.

  • That is some true American ingenuity ! If the carbs are "Redneck" then all of the hot rodders of the 50's and 60's are all rednecks!

  • As you found out nothing is impossible you just have to look at it the right way.

  • gotta say like what you did with the carbs
